    Chiral magnetoresistance in Pt/Co/Pt zigzag wires

    The Rashba effect leads to a chiral precession of the spins of moving electrons while the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) generates preference towards a chiral profile of local spins. We predict that the exchange interaction between these two spin systems results in a 'chiral' magnetoresistance depending on the chirality of the local spin texture. We observe this magnetoresistance by measuring the domain wall (DW) resistance in a uniquely designed Pt/Co/Pt zigzag wire, and by changing the chirality of the DW with applying an in-plane magnetic field. A chirality-dependent DW resistance is found, and a quantitative analysis shows a good agreement with a theory based on the Rashba model. Moreover, the DW resistance measurement allows us to independently determine the strength of the Rashba effect and the DMI simultaneously, and the result implies a possible correlation between the Rashba effect, the DMI, and the symmetric Heisenberg exchange

    Evaluation of cognitive function in adult rhesus monkeys using the finger maze test

    In research on cognitive function, the use of experimental animals is essential for the study of human cognitive processes and mechanisms. Furthermore, non-human primates are necessary for understanding higher cognitive functions in humans. However, there are few cognitive function tests available for non-human primates, Thus, we modified a finger maze test for application to non-human primates. In this study, we assessed learning and memory in 12 adult rhesus monkeys using a finger maze test that was developed to assess cognitive functions in captive non-human primates. The monkeys were trained with moving rewards indicating the correct direction, which allowed the monkeys to obtain the reward. Following training, subjects completed a learning trial and a memory trial two months later. Although the time required for training varied among the monkeys, 11 out of 12 monkeys completed the training and achieved a high success rate in the learning trial as well as in the memory trial conducted 2 months later. This is the first study to apply the finger maze test to adult rhesus monkeys. The finger maze test enabled us to assess learning and memory in several adult rhesus monkeys simultaneously

    Whole cell biosynthesis of a functional oligosaccharide, 2′-fucosyllactose, using engineered Escherichia coli

    BACKGROUND: 2'-Fucosyllactose (2-FL) is a functional oligosaccharide present in human milk which protects against the infection of enteric pathogens. Because 2-FL can be synthesized through the enzymatic fucosylation of lactose with guanosine 5′-diphosphate (GDP)-l-fucose by α-1,2-fucosyltransferase (FucT2), an 2-FL producing Escherichia coli can be constructed through overexpressing genes coding for endogenous GDP- l-fucose biosynthetic enzymes and heterologous fucosyltransferase. RESULTS: The gene for FucT2 from Helicobacter pylori was introduced to the GDP- l-fucose producing recombinant E. coli BL21 star(DE3) strain. However, only small amount of 2-FL was produced in a batch fermentation because the E. coli BL21star(DE3) strain assimilated lactose instead of converting to 2-FL. As an alternative host, the E. coli JM109(DE3) strain which is incapable of assimilating lactose was chosen as a 2-FL producer. Whole cell biosynthesis of 2-FL from lactose was investigated in a series of batch fermentations using various concentrations of lactose. The results of batch fermentations showed that lactose was slowly assimilated by the engineered E. coli JM109(DE3) strain and 2-FL was synthesized without supplementation of another auxiliary sugar for cell growth. A maximum 2-FL concentration of 1.23 g/l was obtained from a batch fermentation with 14.5 g/l lactose. The experimentally obtained yield (g 2-FL/g lactose) corresponded to 20% of the theoretical maximum yield estimated by the elementary flux mode (EFM) analysis. CONCLUSIONS: The experimental 2-FL yield in this study corresponded to about 20% of the theoretical maximum yield, which suggests further modifications via metabolic engineering of a host strain or optimization of fermentation processes might be carried out for improving 2-FL yield. Improvement of microbial production of 2-FL from lactose by engineered E. coli would increase the feasibility of utilizing 2-FL as a prebiotic in various foods

    SkyMapper Southern Survey: First Data Release (DR1)

    We present the first data release (DR1) of the SkyMapper Southern Survey, a hemispheric survey carried out with the SkyMapper Telescope at Siding Spring Observatory in Australia. Here, we present the survey strategy, data processing, catalogue construction and database schema. The DR1 dataset includes over 66,000 images from the Shallow Survey component, covering an area of 17,200 deg2^2 in all six SkyMapper passbands uvgrizuvgriz, while the full area covered by any passband exceeds 20,000 deg2^2. The catalogues contain over 285 million unique astrophysical objects, complete to roughly 18 mag in all bands. We compare our grizgriz point-source photometry with PanSTARRS1 DR1 and note an RMS scatter of 2%. The internal reproducibility of SkyMapper photometry is on the order of 1%. Astrometric precision is better than 0.2 arcsec based on comparison with Gaia DR1.     Close Correlation of Monoamine Oxidase Activity with Progress of Alzheimer’s Disease in Mice, Observed by in Vivo Two-Photon Imaging

    Monoamine oxidases (MAOs) play an important role in Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. We report in vivo comonitoring of MAO activity and amyloid-beta (A beta) plaques dependent on the aging of live mice with AD, using a two-photon fluorescence probe. The probe under the catalytic action of MAO produces a dipolar fluorophore that senses A beta plaques, a general AD biomarker, enabling us to comonitor the enzyme activity and the progress of AD indicated by A beta plaques. The results show that the progress of AD has a close correlation with MAO activity, which can be categorized into three stages: slow initiation stage up to three months, an aggressive stage, and a saturation stage from nine months. Histological analysis also reveals elevation of MAO activity around A beta plaques in aged mice. The close correlation between the MAO activity and AD progress observed by in vivo monitoring for the first time prompts us to investigate the enzyme as a potential biomarker of AD.1195Ysciescopu

    Probing the extragalactic fast transient sky at minute timescales with DECam

    Searches for optical transients are usually performed with a cadence of days to weeks, optimised for supernova discovery. The optical fast transient sky is still largely unexplored, with only a few surveys to date having placed meaningful constraints on the detection of extragalactic transients evolving at sub-hour timescales. Here, we present the results of deep searches for dim, minute-timescale extragalactic fast transients using the Dark Energy Camera, a core facility of our all-wavelength and all-messenger Deeper, Wider, Faster programme. We used continuous 20s exposures to systematically probe timescales down to 1.17 minutes at magnitude limits g>23g > 23 (AB), detecting hundreds of transient and variable sources. Nine candidates passed our strict criteria on duration and non-stellarity, all of which could be classified as flare stars based on deep multi-band imaging. Searches for fast radio burst and gamma-ray counterparts during simultaneous multi-facility observations yielded no counterparts to the optical transients. Also, no long-term variability was detected with pre-imaging and follow-up observations using the SkyMapper optical telescope. We place upper limits for minute-timescale fast optical transient rates for a range of depths and timescales. Finally, we demonstrate that optical gg-band light curve behaviour alone cannot discriminate between confirmed extragalactic fast transients such as prompt GRB flashes and Galactic stellar flares.Comment: Published in MNRA

    Structures of ultrathin copper nanotubes

    We have performed atomistic simulations for helical multi-shell (HMS) Cu nanowires and nanotubes. Our investigation on HMS Cu nanowires and nanotubes has revealed some physical properties that were not dealt in previous works that considered metal nanowires. As the diameter of HMS nanowires increased, their cohesive energy per atom and optimum lattice constant decreased. As the diameter of HMS nanotubes increases, their cohesive energy per atom decreased but optimum lattice constant increased. Shell-shell or core-shell interactions mainly affected on the lattice constant and the diameter of HMS nanowires or nanotubes. This study showed that HMS nanotubes for materials of fcc metal crystals can be maintained when forces exerted on atoms of inner shell of the HMS nanotubes are zero or act on the direction of the outside.Comment: 16 pages, 1 table, 5 figure

    A spectroscopically confirmed Gaia-selected sample of 318 new young stars within ∼200 pc

    In the Gaia era, the majority of stars in the Solar neighbourhood have parallaxes and proper motions precisely determined while spectroscopic age indicators are still missing for a large fraction of low-mass young stars. In this work, we select 756 overluminous late K and early M young star candidates in the southern sky and observe them over 64 nights with the ANU 2.3-m Telescope at Siding Spring Observatory using the Echelle (R = 24 000) and Wide Field spectrographs (WiFeS, R = 3000-7000). Our selection is kinematically unbiased to minimize the preference against low-mass members of stellar associations that dissipate first and to include potential members of diffuse components. We provide measurements of Hα and calcium H&K emission, as well as of Li i 6708 Å in absorption. This enables identification of stars as young as 10-30 Myr-a typical age range for stellar associations. We report on 346 stars showing detectable lithium absorption, 318 of which are not included in existing catalogues of young stars. We also report 125 additional stars in our sample presenting signs of stellar activity indicating youth but with no detectable lithium. Radial velocities are determined for WiFeS spectra with a precision of 3.2 km s-1 and 1.5 km s-1 for the Echelle sample
